Paramedic

Overview


Paramedic is considered one of the modern specialties in Jordan and the world. Whereas, after completing studies, the student can diagnose various emergency medical conditions and provide appropriate care at the scene of the accident and during the transportation phase to hospitals and health centers appropriate for each case.

The graduate paramedic must be fully qualified theoretically and practically, to provide advanced urgent care for different patients, save lives, and prevent further complications.

Bachelor's Degree in Paramedics


The Bachelor's Degree in Paramedicsis one of the very advanced specialties. Paramedic can administer emergency medications, and perform minor procedures such as cricothyrotomy and intraosseaous cannulation for children. Paramedic who holds this degree can play advanced roles in hospitals.

Work Fields


The graduate, who completes study successfully, can apply to the following job positions:

  1. Paramedic at the ambulances of the Jordanian civil defense.
  2. Paramedic at the ambulances of private and governmental hospitals.
  3. Paramedic in the emergency rooms at private and governmental hospitals.
  4. Field paramedic in difficult workplaces sites such as factories and mines.
  5. Flight paramedic.
  6. Emergency call recipientand providing the appropriateinstructions the patient or caller. In addition to directing ambulance teams to the site.

Laboratories


At Prince Al-Hussein Bin Abdullah II Academy there are(3) paramedical laboratories as follows:

  • Advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation laboratory.
  • Medical laboratory.
  • Trauma laboratory.

Clinical Placement


The training Field was distributed into three courses:

  • Internship (1): This Course aims to provide students with the necessary skills to deal with critical situations by simulating students in various scenarios in the field and in the laboratory, before engaging in practical training in emergency departments and ambulances.
  • Internship (2): The student can obtain the necessary experience and under supervision by joining the various appropriate hospital departments, including: emergency department, operating room, intensive care units, coronary care unit, pediatrics, and obstetrics.
  • Internship (3): the student should spend a period of structured training for (8) weeks; moreover the student can train in the ambulance accompanied by experienced paramedics. The student uses the information and skills that he acquired during his study period and learns to play his role as an effective member of the medical team and under the supervision of the ambulance crew.

Study plan


The paramedics department at Prince Al-Hussein bin Abdullah II Academy of Civil Protection awards a bachelor’s degree in paramedics. As the program includes various courses with a total of (132) credit hours distributed as follows:

  1. University requirements and consist of 27 credit hours.
  2. Faculty requirements and consist of 22 credit hours.
  3. Specialization requirements and consist of 71 credit hours.
  4. Supportive specialization requirements and consist of 12 credit hours.

The specialization requirements and the supportive specialization requirements in the Study plan for the bachelor’s degree in paramedics depend on seven basic knowledge fields, as follows:

  1. Fundamental medical sciences, which include biology, microbiology, physiology, anatomy, pathology, biochemistry, chemistry, and pharmacology.
  2. Introductory sciences, which include medical terminology, physical examination and health assessment, fundamentals of paramedics, communication skills for paramedics.
  3. Surgical and traumatic emergencies, which include trauma and environmental emergencies for paramedic (theory, practical, and laboratory).
  4. Medical emergencies, which include medical studies for paramedic 1+2 (theory, practical, and laboratory), cardiac studies for paramedics (theory, practical, and laboratory).
  5. Special categories emergencies, which include toxicology, pediatric and neonatal studies for paramedics (theory, practical, and laboratory), Obstetric and gynecologic studies for paramedics (theory, practical, and laboratory).
  6. Emergency medical services management which include retrieval medicine, selected topics in paramedic profession, management and leadership in allied health science, civil protection sciences, disaster, crisis management and injuries rating, pre-hospital ethics and legal issues, civil protection sciences.
  7. Scientific research methods, statistics, and computer sciences; which include computer skills 1+2, scientific research and statistical methods.
